The Punjab Environmental Protection and Climate Change Department has made fitness certificates mandatory for all government vehicles, including motorcycles, police vans, prison transport buses, and official cars.
The department has issued a circular to all government agencies, including police, health, education, and social welfare departments, instructing them to obtain certificates by January 31.
According to Director General Dr Irfan Ahmed Sheikh, inspections will begin on February 3, and vehicles emitting excessive smoke will face fines, with reports submitted to the Punjab chief secretary.
Non-compliance may result in departmental action.
Teams have been formed to conduct inspections, and fitness certificates will be issued by government workshops.
Agencies have been directed to repair or decommission non-compliant vehicles.
The initiative aims to promote an environment-friendly province, reduce pollution, and enhance the sustainability of government transport operations.
As per the Punjab Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965 and Motor Vehicles Rules, 1969, Transport Vehicles (Public Service Vehicles and Goods Transport) registered in Punjab and operating in Punjab must obtain a Vehicle Fitness Certificate. All commercial vehicles must be tested every six months.
According to the Punjab Transport and Mass Transit Department, any vehicle owner can get an appointment by calling the vehicle inspection and certification system customer service centre.
