Anthony Davis led the Los Angeles Lakers with 36 points and 13 rebounds, while LeBron James contributed 25 points and 12 assists to secure a 118-108 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night at the Chase Center.
The Lakers’ defence shone, particularly in the second half, as they held Warriors star Stephen Curry scoreless after halftime. Curry struggled from the field, shooting 4-for-17 overall and 0-for-8 in the second half. Despite playing through a lingering thumb injury, Curry refused to blame his performance on the setback.
“It sucks, but it’s not an excuse for anything,” Curry said postgame. “Got to play through it.”
Lakers surge in the 3rd quarter
Neither team managed to build a significant lead early on, but the Lakers gained momentum midway through the third quarter. Rookie Max Christie’s back-to-back three-pointers pushed Los Angeles to a nine-point advantage, a lead they maintained for the remainder of the game.
The Lakers improved to 25-18, marking their best record of the season at seven games above .500. This victory also extended their winning streak to three games and solidified their position as a team on the rise.
Warriors’ challenges continue
Golden State, now 22-23, dropped below .500 as injuries continue to hinder their roster. Draymond Green remains sidelined with a calf strain, and Jonathan Kuminga is out with a severe ankle sprain. Head coach Steve Kerr described the team’s current stretch, with eight of nine games at home, as pivotal to their season.
“We’ve got to figure it out,” Kerr said. “These are important games, and we need to stay competitive while dealing with the injuries.”
Curry’s struggles were compounded by the Lakers’ relentless defence. Of Curry’s eight second-half attempts, seven were contested. Davis credited the team’s guards for making things difficult for the Warriors’ sharpshooter.
“Everybody played a part in the Steph Curry defence,” Davis said. “We just tried to make it tough on him.”
James and Curry: A rivalry renewed
Saturday’s game marked the 25th regular-season meeting between LeBron James and Stephen Curry, with James holding a narrow 13-12 edge in their head-to-head record.
After the game, James was asked how the Lakers managed to contain Curry in the second half.
“Just hope that he misses,” James said. “It’s Steph, man. Put bodies in front of him and hope for the best.”
Up next
The Lakers head to Charlotte on Monday to begin a four-game East Coast road trip. Meanwhile, the Warriors host the Utah Jazz on Tuesday in the third game of their six-game homestand.
As the Lakers build momentum, the Warriors face mounting pressure to rediscover their rhythm, particularly with Curry battling nagging injuries and their roster still incomplete.
