In a daring daylight robbery, unidentified armed men stormed a branch of a private bank and took away Rs4.7 million in cash in the Karak district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Friday.
Police told The Express Tribune that the incident had taken place in the Banda Daud Shah tehsil of Karak. The incident occurred in the morning when the bank opened as per its normal routine.
A large group of around 15 to 20 armed men had suddenly entered the building and taken the staff hostage at gunpoint, warning them of severe consequences if they attempted to intervene, local residents said. The accused then collected Rs 4.7 million in cash and fled.
After the robbers escaped, bank staff immediately alerted the police who dispatched a heavy contingent to the scene of the crime.
Police are trying to identify and reach the suspects and have established checkpoints on all routes as part of a search operation, a police official said.
He added that they were also carefully checking surveillance footage and using other sources to identify the culprits. "It is a tough case, but we will arrest the suspects soon," he said.
