ISLAMABAD:

The Environmental Protection Tribunal has expressed serious concern over the performance of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in the I-11 dumping site case.

During a hearing on contempt of court proceedings, the CDA's relevant officer failed to appear, prompting the tribunal to issue a directive for attendance at the next hearing.

A CDA representative assured the tribunal of compliance in the future.

The Pak-EPA also failed to present a detailed report during the proceedings.

The tribunal criticised the Pak-EPA for its lack of action and directed it to fulfil its responsibilities. It warned that a decision would be announced on February 13 if CDA officials fail to appear or provide a satisfactory response at the next hearing.

The tribunal summoned a report from the CDA, but representatives stated that the concerned officer could not attend.

The tribunal instructed the CDA to ensure the officer's presence at the next hearing. When the tribunal sought a report from EPA officials, they cited non-compliance from the CDA as an excuse for their inability to provide a detailed update.

Dissatisfied with the EPA's response, the tribunal reiterated the agency's responsibility to perform its duties.

Residents of the area, present at the hearing, pleaded with the tribunal for relief, stating that living near the dumping site had become unbearable.

They reported being forced to relocate due to the unbearable conditions and urged for immediate intervention.

The tribunal concluded the session by setting February 13 as the final date for the CDA to present its response, warning that a decision would be issued in case of non-compliance.
