Charlamagne Tha God, a prominent radio host known for his outspoken opinions, has made a surprising reversal regarding his characterization of Donald Trump as a "fascist."
In a recent episode of his Brilliant Idiots podcast, Charlamagne revealed that he is reconsidering his previous stance after growing disillusioned with the Democratic Party's actions following the 2024 election.
"I never called Donald Trump a fascist based off anything I heard from Democrats," Charlamagne explained. "I said that because of things I heard come out of Donald Trump. But guess what? I don't even know if I believe it anymore, but only because of how they're acting. I'm like, well goddamn, maybe it ain't that much of a threat."
The radio host, whose real name is Lenard Larry McKelvey, had been one of Trump's loudest critics, frequently labeling the former president as a threat to democracy.
However, Charlamagne's frustration has grown as he witnessed Democratic leaders, including President Joe Biden, shift their tone post-election. He pointed out that while Trump had been labeled an existential threat to the nation, after his win, the rhetoric had significantly softened.
"Do y'all find it strange that now he's won, they're not calling him a threat to democracy, they're not calling him a fascist?" Charlamagne remarked. "On Monday they were just calling him that, and I would think that if you really believed that, then somebody's speech would be about how America f'ed up and how things are about to be really bad. It just makes you wonder how much of it did they really believe? And how much was just politics."
Despite rethinking his views on Trump, Charlamagne emphasized that he would still stand by his vote for Kamala Harris. "That don't change my vote. I still would have voted for the vice president," he said, referring to his support for Biden's running mate.
Charlamagne's frustrations extend beyond Trump, with his criticism also directed at Democratic figures such as Joe Biden and Barack Obama.
He expressed disappointment over Biden's handling of his son Hunter's legal issues, particularly the blanket pardon Biden extended to his son for tax and firearm violations.
"Hunter was singled out because he broke the law," Charlamagne argued. "He was singled out because he had his illegal gun and tax evasion charges, not because he was the president's son. And it also shows me elected officials can do whatever they want as long as they have the political will and courage to do it."
Charlamagne also voiced dissatisfaction with the apparent cordiality between Biden and Trump after the election. "I'm glad it's a peaceful transition of power, but what happened to the 'threat of democracy' talk? What happened to the 'fascist' talk?" he questioned. "I'm just trying to figure out how do you go from 'he's an existential threat to democracy', to 'welcome back.'"
In addition, he took issue with Biden’s "smiling" and "grinning" as he welcomed Trump back into the fold, especially given the intense rhetoric prior to the election.
The broadcaster even accused Biden of "quietly quitting" the presidency, citing the president's behavior in the wake of the election, as well as Obama’s friendly interactions with Trump during Jimmy Carter’s funeral.
