KARACHI:

The Arambagh Furniture Market traders are up in arms against the Auqaf department's decision to fix rents through auction, and they're not taking it lying down.

They staged protest and closed their business on Friday and announced that they would approach the court against this decision. Various trade leaders addressed the protesters.

Atiq Mir, the Chairman of the All Karachi Traders' Union, strongly opposed the Auqaf department's decision to raise rents through an auction process. He said, this move will impact over 2,000 shopkeepers.

One trader noted that evicting long-term tenants and auctioning shops to new owners will only lead to increased corruption. If the goal is to force traders onto the streets, then they are prepared for it.

Fahimuddin Sheikh of Sunni Tehreek (ST) expressed support for the traders.
