Armed gangsters from the Indhar gang launched a deadly attack on Basti Lashari in the Zahir Pir area of Rahim Yar Khan, targeting relatives of Osman Chandia, a police informant.
The attack, reportedly a revenge strike for the death of the notorious gangster Janu Indhar, left four people dead, including three teenage boys.
Police said the Indhar gang carried out the assault to avenge the killing of their leader, Janu Indhar, who was eliminated in a covert police operation in July 2021 with Osman Chandia's assistance.
Indhar had been implicated in the murders of over 10 police officials and civilians, including a mass killing of nine family members in Rahim Yar Khan's Mahi Chowk in 2021.
The deceased included Osman Chandia's uncle, Zaman Gul and three young cousins - Sajan, Madni and Gudduwho were brothers.
The assailants reportedly celebrated their attack outside the victims' home, firing weapons into the air and recording videos, which later surfaced on social media.
Police responded to the attack and intercepted the fleeing suspects, resulting in a shootout that killed two gang members from the Indhar and Shar gangs. Rahim Yar Khan DPO expressed condolences to the victims' families and vowed to bring the attackers to justice.
Task forces have been formed to apprehend the remaining culprits.
The victims' funeral prayers were held in the historic town of Jajja Abbasia, attended by thousands of mourners.
Speaking to the media, Muhammad Irfan, the father of the three teenage victims, criticised the delayed police response, claiming officers arrived 45 minutes after the attack began. He called on the Punjab Chief Minister to take notice of the tragedy and provide justice for his family.
Videos circulating on social media show gangsters celebrating the attack, further highlighting the lawlessness of the region.
