The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) is in the final stages of conserving the iconic Badshahi Mosque, one of the most significant historical landmarks of the Mughal era. Built by Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir between 1671 and 1672, the mosque had suffered structural decline due to improper material use and lack of maintenance.
The project, entrusted to WCLA in 2022 by the Punjab Government through the Auqaf Department, has a total approved cost of Rs350.57 million.
An advisory committee comprising historians, architects, conservationists, engineers, and representatives from the Auqaf and Archeology Departments oversees the work.
Initial steps included detailed documentation and structural assessments, followed by on-site physical work. Progress includes the conservation of mosque chambers, with 50% of the work completed, and 75% of roof repairs finalised.
The illumination of the mosque's domes, minarets, and façade has been finished, providing a stunning night time view.
Additionally, electrical wiring on the roof is underway, and the dilapidated toilet block is being reconstructed. Conservation efforts are also addressing the mosque's weakened red sandstone flooring. The project is set for completion by June 2025.
WCLA Director General Kamran Lashari highlighted the mosque's cultural and historical significance, stating, "Badshahi Mosque attracts thousands of tourists, researchers, and academics. Our institution is committed to restoring its authentic grandeur. Beyond structural rehabilitation, we aim to enhance public access and ensure a comfortable visitor experience."
Conservation and Planning Deputy Director Mubashar Hassan emphasised the architectural brilliance of the mosque.
"The use of red sandstone, stucco, and fresco in Badshahi Mosque reflects the Mughal Empire's artistic excellence. Our conservation efforts adhere to international standards while preserving authenticity. We've also illuminated the mosque to enhance its visual appeal at night. To enrich visitor experience, we are employing trained tourist guides to make historical exploration accessible and enjoyable."
