Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that for three generations, his family and the PPP have worked towards the development of Karachi. He also highlighted the longstanding neglect faced by Sindh at the hands of the federal government.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Expressway, formerly known as the Qayyumabad to Shah Faisal Malir Expressway, Bilawal praised the efforts of his family and the PPP in addressing the city's needs.
"President Zardari provided resources to Karachi like no one else has," he stated. "The federal government has always treated Sindh unfairly."
The inauguration ceremony, held at the expressway's starting point, was attended by several high-profile political figures, including Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, senior PPP leaders Nisar Khoro and Qaim Ali Shah, and other members of the provincial cabinet.
Bilawal recalled the contributions of his grandfather, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, and mother, Benazir Bhutto, towards Karachi's development. "Shaheed Bhutto laid the foundation of major projects for Karachi, including the Steel Mill and Shahrah Faisal, while Shaheed Benazir Bhutto fought against two dictatorial governments," he said.
He further emphasised the role of Karachi's youth in the struggles of his family. "In the struggle for democracy, Karachi's youth played an important part," he added, highlighting the efforts of Benazir Bhutto in maintaining peace and providing employment for the city's young population.
Addressing the current issues facing Karachi, Bilawal noted that solutions could only be found through public-private partnerships. "If the business community doesn't make a profit, why would they work with you? We need to address all of Karachi's problems through collaboration with the private sector."
He also touched on the ongoing neglect of Sindh by the federal government. "Sindh's resources are withheld under various pretexts," he said.
Bilawal appealed to the Sindh Chief Minister to prioritise the city's water crisis. "We have been facing a water shortage issue in Karachi since Qaim Ali Shah's tenure. I urge the Mayor and the Minister of Local Government to focus on water projects," he said, adding that he was encouraged by the Sindh government's plans for desalination projects.
The PPP leader also spoke about plans to enhance the city's green spaces and infrastructure, including solar and green energy initiatives. "We aim to create more green parks and earmark space in the next budget for solar and green energy projects," he announced.
In conclusion, Bilawal expressed his desire to leave a positive legacy. "If I contest elections in 20 years, I want to be able to tell the people what I have done for them. The PPP believes in positive politics," he stated.
