Amazon scales back DEI initiatives amid ongoing corporate trend

Amazon trims diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, joining other corporations making similar cuts in 2025.

Amazon is the latest major corporation to scale back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, following similar moves by companies like Walmart, Meta, and Ford.

The decision was revealed in a memo to employees last month from Candi Castleberry, a human resources executive at Amazon, and first reported by Bloomberg.

In the memo, Castleberry highlighted Amazon's effort to unify employee groups under one umbrella and focus on programs with “proven outcomes” rather than maintaining individual group-specific initiatives. She noted the company’s goal to foster “a more truly inclusive culture” while evaluating the effectiveness of past DEI efforts.

Additionally, Amazon has removed sections titled "Equity for Black People" and "LGBTQ+ Rights" from its "Our Positions" webpage. In response, Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated, “We update this page from time to time to ensure that it reflects updates we’ve made to various programs and positions.”

The rollback is part of a broader trend in corporate America. In recent months, companies like Meta have made significant changes to DEI policies, and activists like Robby Starbuck have pressured firms to adopt “corporate neutrality” on divisive issues.

Starbuck, who claims to have contacted Amazon executives about their "woke policies" in December, posted on X (formerly Twitter) threatening further exposure unless Amazon clarifies its DEI changes. “We won’t stop until corporate America is sane again,” he said.

For now, Amazon's subtle adjustments contrast with more sweeping changes by other companies, but they signal a growing shift in how corporations address diversity and inclusion.
