Priyanka Chopra has joined the Oscar-shortlisted short film Anuja as an executive producer, marking a significant milestone for the film, which is in the running for the 2025 Academy Awards in the live-action short film category.
Anuja, directed by Adam J. Graves, tells the poignant story of a nine-year-old girl, Anuja, working in a back-alley garment factory with her older sister.
The film explores the emotional turmoil of a life-altering decision that could change their future. The short film has already received recognition, having won the Live Action Short award at the 2024 HollyShorts Film Festival.
In a statement to Variety, Priyanka Chopra expressed her pride in being part of the project. "This beautiful film shines a spotlight on a subject that affects millions of children worldwide, who are faced with the impossible decision between a future they cannot yet see and the immediate realities of their present.
Anuja is a poignant, thought-provoking piece that makes us reflect deeply on the power of choices and how they shape the course of our lives."
The film collaborates with the Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT), a nonprofit founded to support street and working children. It is also backed by Shine Global, the production house known for its Oscar-winning films War/Dance (2007) and Inocente (2012).
Other producers of the film include Mindy Kaling and Oscar-winner Guneet Monga, further elevating its reach and impact.
Director Adam J. Graves praised Chopra's involvement, highlighting her advocacy for children's rights globally. "She brings so much to the table, not only as a world-class talent but as an advocate for the rights of children and girls across the globe. Her involvement will supercharge Anuja's global impact."
Producer Suchitra Mattai also welcomed Priyanka Chopra's participation, saying, "Priyanka’s faith in the power of Anuja’s story means a lot to us, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her join our team."
Sajda Pathan, who portrays the lead role of Anuja, drew from her own life experiences, having survived on the streets of Delhi before receiving support from the Salaam Baalak Trust.
Priyanka Chopra previously executive produced the Oscar-nominated documentary To Kill a Tiger and the acclaimed Netflix film The White Tiger.
