Amazon MGM Studios and Universal have canceled the Tuesday premieres of Unstoppable and Wolf Man, respectively, as Southern California grapples with severe winds and a rapidly spreading wildfire in the Pacific Palisades.
Unstoppable, starring Jennifer Lopez and Jharrel Jerome, was set for a red-carpet screening in West Hollywood at the Directors Guild of America headquarters. “As much as we are looking forward to celebrating this wonderful and inspiring film, safety is our first priority,” Amazon MGM Studios announced.
Lopez, Jerome, and co-stars Don Cheadle, Michael Peña, and Mykelti Williamson were among those slated to attend the premiere. College wrestling champion Anthony Robles, whose story inspired the film, was also scheduled to appear with his mother, Judy Robles, and director William Goldenberg.
Shortly after, Universal pulled the plug on the Wolf Man premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, citing “sensitivities around the worsening weather situation” and evacuations in the Pacific Palisades. Aditionally, Paramount and Max also canceled their Wednesday premieres of Better Man and The Pitt due to the dangerous conditions in Los Angeles caused by the Pacific Palisades fire and severe winds.
The cancellations come as Southern California faces a dangerous windstorm with gusts reaching up to 100 mph in parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The Pacific Palisades fire, fueled by these life-threatening winds, grew to over 1,200 acres by the afternoon, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate and destroying several homes.
