Former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi has been indicted in the Rs1.23 billion National Accountability Bureau (NAB) corruption reference. However, the former Punjab CM pleaded not guilty.
Accountability Court judge Zubair Shehzad Kiyani conducted the hearing of the case.
At the outset of the hearing, Amjad Pervaiz, counsel for Parvez Elahi, appeared before the court. He told the court the former Punjab CM has come in the precincts of the court over the court's order; however, he was unable to get off the car due to his frail health conditions.
He told the court that his client wants to submit a request for a long time exemption from the court hearing. He assured the court that there would be no more delay from his client.
During the court proceedings, the court staff received Parvez Elahi's signature in the car and marked his attendance. Subsequently, the court indicted him in the case pertaining to receiving kickbacks in developmental projects.
The former Punjab CM pleaded not guilty. The court summoned the prosecution witnesses on January 21, the next date of hearing.
It is pertinent to mention that the court had frozen Parvez Elahi's son Moonis Elahi's assets and declared him as proclaimed offender for skipping the court hearings. Both father and son were nominated in a Rs1.23 billion reference filed by NAB for receiving kickbacks and bribe in developmental projects.
The court also indicted Muhammad Khan Bhatti, ex-principal secretary of former Punjab chief minister Parvez Elahi and others in the last hearing of the same case.
