In 2024, Rawalpindi's courts sentenced 185 drug smugglers to a total of 1,571 years in prison, including 10 women involved in supplying drugs to students in educational institutions. Among those sentenced was the notorious international drug smuggler, Beenish alias Mona, known for her expertise in disguising herself and evading capture.
The convicted smugglers were found to have been involved in a range of illicit activities, including trafficking ice, heroin, hashish, and other drugs to students in schools and colleges. Over the course of the year, authorities recovered drugs worth approximately Rs600 million from these individuals.
In addition to the lengthy prison sentences, the courts also imposed fines totalling over Rs2.16 million on those convicted of selling drugs to students. The crackdown on drug trafficking in educational institutions is part of ongoing efforts to address the rising use of drugs among young people.
Among the drug smugglers convicted, several were linked to major smuggling rings, with one particularly high-profile case involving Mona, who had travelled multiple times to the UAE, where she coordinated her smuggling activities. Investigations revealed that she and others were targeting both male and female students, fuelling the spread of drugs.
