WhatsApp will stop working on older smartphones in 2025 due to changes in compatibility with operating systems.

Starting January 1, 2025, the app will no longer support Android devices running KitKat (version 4.4) or older.

This means users with these outdated OS versions will either need to upgrade their device or risk losing access to WhatsApp.

While some users may still be able to update their devices to a newer OS version, many older models no longer receive official updates from manufacturers, meaning they can't be upgraded unless done through risky DIY methods that could void warranties or damage the phone.

The affected Android models include:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

In addition to the Android devices, WhatsApp will stop working on iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1 from May 5, 2025.

This impacts the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which can only be updated to iOS 12.5.7.

These changes, affecting both the regular WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business, are part of the platform's effort to keep the app secure and functional on modern devices.
