The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched a revenue and tax data collection initiative for marriage halls across Karachi.
FBR officials, including assistant commissioners from Regional Tax Offices (RTO) I and II, on Thursday conducted surprise visits to several marriage halls in District East to gather records of events held and payments received by the halls.
These visits covered several marriage halls situated on Shahra-e-Faisal, Nursery, PECHS and Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
According to an assistant commissioner, withholding tax receipts are also being collected from owners of marriage halls along with records of ceremonies for the entire year. Such data will be provided to chief commissioners.
He said that an FBR audit team would examine records of marriage halls across the city and their income from the ceremonies held.
Meanwhile, there is a sense of anxiety among marriage hall owners following the unexpected visits by FBR teams. They are considering reaching out to the revenue board chairman to address their concerns.
