First batch of Bilawal Medical College pass out; 98 awarded degrees

The first batch of 98 students of Bilawal Medical College (BMC) for Boys were conferred their academic degrees at the institute's maiden convocation on Saturday. The event was held at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, which is the college's parent university.

Addressing the ceremony, Vice Chancellor LUMHS Prof Dr Ikram Din Ujjan said the college "stands as a testament to our resolve to expand medical education and provide opportunities to aspiring doctors in Sindh." He recalled that the ex-VC LUMHS Prof Dr Noshad A Shaikh had envisaged the college and took the initiatives for its establishment as well. It was completed during the stint of former VC Prof Dr Bikha Ram Devrajani who also turned the Civil Hospital Kotri, Jamshoro, into a teaching hospital of the college.

VC Ujjan also described the setting up of Liaquat Institute of Medical and Allied Health Sciences, Thatta district, and the subsequent attachment of a government hospital as its teaching hospital in Thatta as other landmark accomplishments.

In his speech, the ex-VC Shaikh briefed about the vision behind setting up the college saying that the purpose was to bring down the shortage of male doctors in the country. Chairman Sindh Higher Education Commission Prof Dr Tariq Rafi underlined that the medical sciences held a commanding position among all other professions because it dealt with human lives.
