PTA blocks scam numbers, IMEIs

PTA's received 27,351 complaints regarding stolen mobile phones, while 1,818 requests made to unblock devices.

ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Telecommun-ication Authority (PTA) has blocked thousands of mobile numbers involved in fraudulent activities against mobile users.

According to PTA officials, strict action continues against those engaging in scams. In the past year, a total of 5,294 mobile numbers linked to fraud were blocked.

Moreover, 4,507 international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) numbers involved in fraudulent activities were disabled, and 113 CNICs associated with scams were also blocked.

The PTA's report revealed that it received 27,351 complaints regarding stolen mobile phones over the year, while 1,818 requests were made to unblock devices.

In a related development, the PTA has resumed issuing class licenses for data services across the country.

According to a PTA statement, VPNs service providers must obtain a class license for offering VPN and related services.

On Monday, PTA Chairman Maj Gen (retd) Hafeezur Rehman clarified that the regulator has no plans to block VPNs, despite having the technical capability to do so.
