Luigi Mangione has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder and second-degree murder as an act of terrorism for the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced Tuesday.
Mangione faces additional weapons charges stemming from the December 4 shooting outside the New York Hilton Midtown.
Thompson, 50, was targeted in what officials describe as a “well-planned” attack. Police allege Mangione shot Thompson from behind just before a scheduled investors’ meeting. Surveillance footage showed the suspect fleeing on foot and an electric bike, prompting a nationwide manhunt. Mangione was eventually arrested on December 9 at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where authorities found him in possession of a gun with a silencer, handwritten notes resembling a manifesto, and fake identification.
Authorities believe Mangione harbored resentment toward corporate America. Writings found at his arrest reportedly included statements such as “these parasites had it coming” and references to insurance company tactics like “deny, defend, depose.” Bullet casings recovered from the scene contained similar phrases. Police also found fingerprints matching Mangione’s on items near the crime scene, including a water bottle and protein bar.
During the press briefing, Bragg highlighted the severity of the charges, calling it a “frightening and targeted murder” intended to “intimidate and shock.” Mangione’s legal team, led by attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo in New York, is expected to challenge the evidence, including ballistics and fingerprint findings.
Mangione, whose online writings reportedly include praise for the Unabomber’s manifesto, has not yet entered a plea. If convicted, he faces life in prison. Authorities are continuing to investigate Mangione’s movements during the manhunt and his exact motive.
