Disney+ has confirmed the return of the beloved sitcom with a four-episode limited series.
Premiering as part of the show’s 25th-anniversary celebration, the revival brings back its hallmark humor and chaos while exploring new family dynamics.
Leading the revival are original stars Frankie Muniz (Malcolm), Bryan Cranston (Hal), and Jane Kaczmarek (Lois). Linwood Boomer, the show’s creator, returns as a writer and executive producer alongside Ken Kwapis, who directs all four episodes. Produced by 20th Television and New Regency for Disney Branded Entertainment, the revival aims to deliver nostalgia with a fresh twist.
While Christopher Kennedy Masterson (Francis) and Justin Berfield (Reese) are likely to reprise their roles, Erik Per Sullivan (Dewey) is not expected to return, given his retirement from acting. New characters, including Malcolm’s wife and daughter, are set to join the cast, adding an exciting generational shift to the narrative.
Set around Hal and Lois’ wedding anniversary, the revival will explore the evolving family dynamics and Malcolm’s new role as a parent. According to Disney Branded Television President Ayo Davis, the series will blend nostalgia with surprises, capturing the essence of the original while resonating with new audiences.
