CD Projekt unveiled the first trailer for The Witcher 4 at The Game Awards 2024, spotlighting Ciri as the lead protagonist of a new Witcher saga. The highly anticipated single-player RPG builds on the legacy of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, with an open-world design and Ciri stepping into the spotlight.
The cinematic trailer showcases Ciri embarking on a mission to save a girl from a sinister forest creature. However, her heroic quest is complicated by the villagers' prejudices, highlighting a key Witcher theme: "Monsters come in all forms."
According to the studio, “the cinematic trailer is pre-rendered in a custom build of Unreal Engine 5 on an unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU". It also teases gameplay elements like Witcher spells and a new chain-hook weapon, used to tether enemies and prepare them for Ciri’s silver sword.
Game director Sebastian Kalemba revealed that this is just the beginning of Ciri's journey:
“We're kicking off a brand-new Witcher saga, this time with Ciri as the heart of the story. It just felt natural, and we believe that Ciri deserves it."
Fans of the franchise can expect a dark and grounded narrative as Ciri navigates the challenges of becoming a true Witcher. Kalemba hinted that the story would explore the complexities of her path, offering a fresh perspective on the Witcher universe.
While Ciri leads the charge, the trailer closes with a subtle nod to Geralt of Rivia, teasing his possible return.
For clarity, this project, previously codenamed Polaris, marks a new era for CD Projekt's beloved franchise.
