Nicholas Mpirwe, the beloved comedian and media personality known by his stage name Messe Bontwe, has passed away.
His death was confirmed on Thursday, with reports indicating he died in California, United States. The cause of death has not been revealed.
Messe was a key figure in Uganda’s comedy scene, particularly known for his role in the renowned comedy group Amarula Family. Alongside fellow comedians Allan Mujuni (Amooti Omubalanguzi), Paddy 'Bitama' Ssali, and Daniel Kanyerezi (Irish Kyebandula), Messe gained recognition in the early 2000s.

The group’s comedic skit ‘Side Mirror,’ which aired on WBS Television, became a cultural touchstone in Uganda. The show’s satirical take on real-life issues resonated with audiences, making it one of the most popular programs on local television at the time. It also led to live comedy shows that further cemented their place in Uganda’s entertainment scene.
Messe retired from comedy in 2021, citing his feeling of being too old for the craft. He also worked as a radio presenter at Dembe FM and Super FM, the latter being his final station in Uganda before relocating to the United States.
Messe’s passing marks a significant loss for the entertainment community, especially for the many Ugandans who grew up watching his performances on television and radio.
