The Boston Red Sox made waves on Wednesday by acquiring All-Star pitcher Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox. However, their offseason plans don’t end there, as the team is actively pursuing additional pitching reinforcements, including Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes.

Reports from Alex Speier of The Boston Globe indicate that Boston is exploring top-tier rotation options like Burnes while also considering mid-tier alternatives. Additionally, Jon Morosi of MLB Network revealed that the Red Sox are in discussions with the Seattle Mariners for another potential starting pitcher. These efforts underscore the team’s commitment to strengthening their pitching staff.

While rumors suggested a trade involving Triston Casas and Mariners’ Luis Castillo, Speier confirmed these talks are not in progress. Still, the Red Sox’s focus remains sharp. Chris Cotillo of MassLive revealed that Boston had aggressively pursued Max Fried in free agency before he signed an eight-year, $128 million deal with the Yankees. Cotillo also noted that the Red Sox are preparing an offer for Burnes, signaling their intent to land a game-changing ace.

Crochet brings significant promise to Boston’s rotation, having delivered a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 209 strikeouts in 146 innings last season. His successful transition from bullpen standout to starter in Chicago highlights his potential. Adding Burnes, a 2021 National League Cy Young winner, would elevate the rotation even further. Burnes’ stellar 2024 performance with the Baltimore Orioles, featuring a 2.92 ERA and 181 strikeouts, showcased his adaptability to the American League.

The Red Sox aim to surpass division rivals like Baltimore and New York in 2025. Combining Crochet’s potential with Burnes’ proven excellence could significantly boost their chances, signaling Boston’s readiness to compete at the highest level.
