Hannah Kobayashi, a 30-year-old photographer from Hawaii, has been found safe after a month-long disappearance that began with her crossing into Mexico. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed her family notified them of her safety on December 11, but specific details about her current location or how she made contact remain undisclosed.
The case drew national attention after Kobayashi failed to board a connecting flight from Los Angeles to New York on November 8, 2024. Adding to the family’s distress, her father, Ryan Kobayashi, died by suicide during the search. Kobayashi’s mother, Brandi Yee, and sister, Sydni Kobayashi, expressed gratitude for the public’s support and requested privacy as they process the ordeal.
Surveillance footage reviewed on December 1 showed Kobayashi entering Tijuana, Mexico, appearing alone and not in distress. Despite this, her family maintained fears of foul play, citing concerning text messages received before her disappearance. Investigators stated there was no evidence to suggest she was a victim of trafficking or foul play and described the case as a voluntary disappearance.
The disappearance spotlighted the toll on families searching for missing loved ones. Kobayashi’s father had flown to Los Angeles to aid in the search and, before his death, described feeling guilt over their estranged relationship.
Authorities have not yet confirmed if Kobayashi has returned to the U.S. or plans to speak with law enforcement. The LAPD emphasized her right to privacy, urging her to reassure loved ones of her safety.
