GENEVA:

Sikhs and Kashmiris gathered in Geneva for a joint protest against India in commemoration of International Human Rights Day.

The demonstrators raised slogans, calling for the freedom of Kashmiris and Sikhs and voicing their opposition to India's actions against these people.

International Kashmir Peace Forum (IKPF) Chairman Zahid Hashmiwas was among the speakers. He noted that despite the recognition of human rights under Article 217 A of international law, violations were being committed.

Hashmi criticised the hypocrisy of those who claim to be champions of human rights, but overlook the suffering of oppressed peoples, particularly in Indian Illegally-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and in areas where Sikh minorities exist.

He condemned the Indian government's actions, claiming it was systematically denying Kashmiris their rights and oppressing other minorities, including Sikhs. Hashmi further highlighted the militarisation of Occupied Kashmir, where over 1.1 million troops have been stationed to suppress dissent and violate human rights.

He also noted the ongoing crackdown on political leaders, the closure of educational institutions, and the lack of basic medical supplies in the IIOJK.

Hashmi reaffirmed the commitment of Kashmiris and Sikhs to their struggle for freedom, warning that India's ongoing repression could lead to heightened tensions and conflict. He urged the international community to hold India accountable for its actions and stand in solidarity with the oppressed people of Kashmir and the Sikh community in India.
