Saturday Night Live delivered a surprise during its December 7 episode, hosted by Gladiator 2 star Paul Mescal. Among the evening’s sketches, controversial internet personality Trisha Paytas made an unexpected cameo, marking her first appearance on the long-running NBC series.
One sketch centered around Spotify’s 2024 Wrapped feature, humorously showcasing users’ most-streamed music. Mescal’s character proudly shares his top artist, fictional “anti-instrumentalist sound guru” Satoshi Gutman, portrayed by Bowen Yang. After playing Gutman’s bizarre track “Y’all Made Me Celibate,” Mescal shares a clip from Gutman’s podcast featuring Paytas as a guest.
“Hey bastards!” exclaims Paytas in the clip before joining Gutman in the mantra, “the best bussy is celibacy.” The scene escalates when Gutman and Paytas make an in-person visit. Paytas later joined the SNL cast onstage during Mescal’s closing farewell.
The appearance sparked social media buzz, with viewers expressing astonishment at Paytas’ mainstream debut. “Paul Mescal saying ‘thank you to Trisha Paytas’ — what universe are we in?” one fan tweeted. Others highlighted the unpredictable nature of modern pop culture.
Paytas, known for her dramatic YouTube vlogs boasting over five million subscribers, has often been accused of creating controversial clickbait content to gain fame. Her appearance on SNL added another layer to her polarizing public persona.
In addition to Paytas’ cameo, Mescal impressed audiences with a musical parody of Gladiator 2. Performing the song “There’s No Place Like Rome,” he donned a witch’s hat and flew from the Colosseum on a broomstick in a nod to Wicked’s “Defying Gravity,” blending historical drama with Broadway flair.
SNL’s blend of unexpected guest appearances and creative sketches keeps viewers engaged, leaving fans eager to see what surprises lie ahead in future episodes.
