LAHORE:

Police claimed to have arrested three suspects in connection with the killing of Punjab University (PU) student Rana Ammar, recovering the weapon used in the incident.

Iqbal Town SP Bilal Ahmed said Rana Ammar, a student of Gender Studies, was fatally shot three times. He was with his friends, Dilawar, Abdullah, and Huzaifa, at an eatery near Punjab University when the tragedy occurred.

SP Ahmed revealed that the car and the 9mm pistol involved belonged to Dilawar. The pistol was placed on the dashboard when Huzaifa, sitting in the backseat, requested it. While handling the pistol, Huzaifa accidentally discharged it, firing multiple bullets.

The shots pierced through the car seat, striking Rana Ammar, who was seated in the front.

Rana Ammar was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries. A murder case was registered under the complaint of the victim's father, Rana Akhtar.

DIG Operations Lahore, Muhammad Faisal Kamran, took notice of the incident and ordered the suspects' arrest. SP Bilal Ahmed, along with DSP Circle Atif Miraj Khan and Investigation Incharge Nabeela Kausar, led a police team that apprehended the suspects.

Dilawar was arrested from the hospital, while Huzaifa was tracked down in a suburban area of Gujrat.

The authorities recovered the car and the 9mm pistol. SP Ahmed confirmed that Huzaifa's firing was accidental.

SP Ahmed also addressed efforts by certain student groups to misrepresent the incident, clarifying that the three students had no affiliation with any organisation.

DIG Faisal Kamran commended SP Bilal Ahmed and his team for swiftly apprehending the suspects and reiterated a zero-tolerance policy against lawbreakers.

"The crackdown on those who take the law into their hands will continue," he asserted.
