Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday appointed Barrister Ali Zafar as member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) after PTI leader Shibli Faraz stepped down from the body citing registration of "false cases" and a "series of FIRs" against him.
Barrister Ali Zafar will represent the opposition in the JCP.
Faraz, in his letter to Senate chairman, cited registration of "false cases" and a "series of FIRs" against him as his reason for stepping down from the body. He nominated Senator Barrister Ali Zafar to take his place on the 13-member body.
The JCP is tasked with overseeing judicial appointments to the Supreme Court, high courts, and Federal Shariat Court, as well as evaluating the performance of high court judges.
Faraz had been nominated to the commission last month, following the reconstitution of the forum under the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
A day earlier, Omar Ayub, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, resigned from the JCP, citing multiple FIRs and legal cases against him as the reason for his decision.
