Auli'i Cravalho, best known for her role as Moana in the hit Disney film, is reflecting on the major milestones in her life, including the full-circle moment of buying her mother a house. In an exclusive interview with People, the 24-year-old actress shared her gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices, particularly how her mother, Puanani, supported her while they lived on food stamps in Hawaii. Cravalho recalls growing up in a one-bedroom apartment in Mililani, where she and her mom made do with limited resources.

When Cravalho was cast as Moana at the age of 14, her family’s life changed drastically. Despite the fame and success, her mother remained a grounding influence, ensuring that the young star stayed humble and focused. "My parents taught me valuable lessons," Cravalho said. "They were like, 'If Moana doesn't go anywhere, you need to finish high school, do your chores, and not let it get to your head.'"

Now a Broadway star in Cabaret, Cravalho acknowledges that the success of Moana allowed her to provide a better life for her family. “I bought my mommy a house. She’s happily retired,” she says with pride. While her career took off, Cravalho admits there were challenging moments, such as feeling drained after promotional events and dealing with the pressures of being a Disney star. Her mother, however, helped her navigate these challenges, teaching her the importance of balance and kindness.

Cravalho’s journey has come full circle as she reprises her role in Moana 2, reflecting on her growth as an artist and a person since her breakout role.
