Couple shot dead over free-will marriage

A couple was shot dead in the Old City area for marrying of their free will on Friday.

Ataullah, son of Pir Muhammad Khan, and his wife, Rahadiya, alias Samreen daughter of Muhammad Gul, were shot dead by unidentified gunmen near Mewa Shah mosque on Thursday, according to SHO Fida Khan Marwat.

He added that the deceased, who hailed from Bajaur tribal district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, had contracted a love marriage two years ago. After the marriage, the couple moved to Lahore before settling in Karachi. Initially, they stayed at a hotel in Lyari before renting a house near Mewa Shah mosque in the Lyari area of Napier. On Thursday, the deceased couple was returning to Lyari in a rickshaw from a shopping mall near Sea View where they were shot dead by unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle. Asfandyar, a cousin of Ataullah, told police that a tribal Jirga had expelled Ataullah and his wife from Bajaur for defying their families and contracting love marriage. The SHO said that they have registered a case against unidentified suspects on the complaint of Asfandyar and started investigation.
