Hip-hop legend TJ Swan of Juice Crew dies at 57

The hip-hop community is grieving the loss of T.J. Swan, a legendary singer and influential member of the Juice Crew, who passed away on November 22.

His family confirmed the news on his official Instagram account, while fellow Juice Crew member Roxanne Shante shared tributes to the late vocalist.

T.J. Swan was instrumental in shaping the sound of 1980s hip-hop, becoming one of the first vocalists to collaborate on iconic tracks. Introduced to the Juice Crew by Biz Markie, Swan’s distinct voice elevated hits like MC Shan’s ‘Left Me Lonely’ and Biz Markie’s ‘Make the Music with Your Mouth Biz’ and ‘Nobody Beats the Biz.’ His soulful contributions played a significant role in the success of these records.

The news of his passing prompted heartfelt tributes from prominent hip-hop figures, including Jazzy Jeff, Killer Mike, Posdnuos of De La Soul, and Big Gipp. Swan’s influence extended beyond his era, with his hook from ‘Left Me Lonely’ being sampled in Big Gipp and Nelly’s chart-topping track ‘Grillz.’

The Juice Crew, founded by DJ Mr. Magic and supported by Cold Chillin’ Records, was a groundbreaking collective from Queensbridge, New York. Members like Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shante, and Kool G Rap helped define the New School era, leaving an enduring legacy in hip-hop.
