Sindh Moorat March will be held on November 24 at Rani Bagh Theater in Hyderabad between 3pm and 9pm. The fair will showcase the rights of the transgender community through various cultural performances including dhamal, dance and drama.
In this regard, a press conference was held on Monday in Karachi Press Club where transgender rights activist Bindia Rana, City Council Member Shahzadi Rai, and other prominent personalities participated.
Addressing the press conference, Shahzadi Rai said that Sindh Moorat March is the first political movement of the transgender community which has been going on for the past two years. She denounced the injustice subjected to transgender who are subjected to ruthless murders, alleging that such cases are usually disposed by offering blood money to the heirs, which is completely unfair. She also said that families deny inheritance rights to transgender persons.
Rai appreciated the Sindh government for announcing an education policy for the transgender community, and stressed for its early implementation. She urged that the identity and history of the transgender community should be included in the curriculum to instill respect for the transgender community in the hearts of the new generation.
Rai lamented that while a quota of 0.5 per cent has been allocated for the transgender community in government jobs, it is not being implemented.
Speaking at the conference, Bindia Rana criticised societal attitudes, saying that the transgender community is demanding equal rights and faces harassment in jobs, housing, and health issues. She demanded the government to take steps to treat other diseases besides HIV.
