Smog issue will take years to resolve as it's a 'decades-long' problem: Maryam Nawaz

CM Punjab says issue is complex, but provincial government is taking all necessary measures to mitigate its impact

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz acknowledged that the smog issue has persisted for years, stating it will take several more years to fully resolve the problem.

Speaking to the media in London alongside her father, Nawaz Sharif, on Tuesday, she emphasised that while the issue is complex and cannot be solved immediately, the provincial government is taking all necessary measures to mitigate its impact.

“The smog issue has been around for years, and it cannot be resolved instantly. The Punjab government is taking steps to address it, and we hope to overcome it,” Maryam said.

She added that the efforts to control the smog are ongoing and will take a few years to bear fruit. “Insha Allah, the issue will be resolved,” she assured.

On the launch of new airline, she said that the provincial government is considering to launch Air Punjab service, with discussions still underway.

Regarding the broader economic situation, the CM highlighted the potential of Punjab, stating that the province requires hardworking and sincere individuals to make progress.

"Pakistan needs stability, and it is beginning to emerge from its struggles. We are now seeing positive news and improvements in the economy,” she said.

Maryam expressed confidence that Pakistan is on the path to recovery, citing the recent rise in the stock market and a noticeable decrease in inflation as indicators of progress.

"For the first time since Nawaz Sharif’s government, inflation has decreased, marking a reduction after seven years,” she added.
