Verizon Fios outage hits millions from Boston to Washington; customers report service issues on social media platforms

A significant Verizon Fios outage has affected millions across the US East Coast, with reports of internet disruptions from Boston to Washington, D.C. According to Down Detector, complaints spiked between midnight and 2 a.m. EST, as users across multiple states began reporting service issues early Tuesday morning.

Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) quickly became the outlet for frustrated customers. "Verizon has all of us night owls and insomniacs in a tizzy because there’s an apparent outage nationwide. It’s definitely here in DC, MD, and I believe Virginia," one user shared. Another described the situation as "unusual" and "annoying," emphasizing the wide impact and lengthy duration of the outage.

Down Detector recorded thousands of complaints during the peak hours, revealing that 90% were related to internet connectivity issues, while 9% were classified as "total blackout," and 1% involved TV streaming. Affected regions span a nearly 300-mile stretch, with disruptions reported as far south as Richmond, Virginia, and north to Pennsylvania, encompassing major cities such as New York and Philadelphia.

In response to one user's post, Verizon's support team acknowledged the issue, stating, "There is either an outage or network maintenance impacting your area. We don’t have full details just yet. Our apologies for any inconvenience this is causing. We’re trying to get all the information from our network team so we can provide you all an update."

Verizon Fios, a fiber-optic internet, TV, and phone service, remains one of the largest networks in the country, covering about 70% of the U.S. with LTE service. The company has yet to release a comprehensive statement on the incident.
