'Tarzan' actor Ron Ely passes away at 86, remembered for iconic 1960s role and unique career

Ron Ely, the actor who famously portrayed Tarzan on NBC in the 1960s, has passed away at 86. Ely, known for his tall, muscular build, brought the jungle hero to life and inspired a new generation's vision of Tarzan. His daughter, Kirsten Casale Ely, confirmed that he died peacefully at his Los Alamos, California home on September 29.

While not as globally recognized as Johnny Weismuller, who portrayed Tarzan in the 1930s, Ely brought his own charisma to the character, performing his own stunts and interacting directly with wild animals, adding a realistic intensity to the show. His career included hosting Miss America in the 1980s and acting in the 1975 film Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze. After retiring in 2001, he dedicated time to family and authored two mystery novels, Night Shadows and East Beach.

In 2019, Ely faced a personal tragedy when his wife, Valerie Lundeen Ely, was killed, and his son, Cameron Ely, was shot by police. Ely challenged the investigation's findings but remained focused on family until his passing. Ely’s contributions to TV and literature continue to resonate, marking him as a beloved figure in entertainment history.
