Health risks rise as schools in Punjab shift timings in response to severe smog

Punjab authorities have announced new school timings in response to the escalating smog crisis, which poses severe health risks across the province.

The Punjab Environmental Protection Authority (PEPA) issued a notification on Wednesday, detailing the adjusted timings and additional precautionary measures.

Effective from October 28 until January 31, 2025, schools will begin at 8:45 am. In addition, assemblies are now required to be held indoors to reduce students' exposure to the hazardous air.

PEPA has also advised citizens to limit outdoor activities, especially exercise, and to keep doors and windows shut to minimise air pollution intake. “Wear a mask, check your vehicle’s fitness, and take necessary precautions,” the notification urged.

Fireworks and similar activities have been banned until January 31, 2025, in an effort to control the smog levels.

Meanwhile, Lahore has once again topped the list of the most polluted cities globally. For the second consecutive day, the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeded 500, reaching 503, a level classified as "hazardous" by the US AQI standards.

Medical experts have issued warnings for individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma, urging them to exercise "extreme caution" during this period. Those with dust allergies have also been advised to stay indoors to avoid potential health complications.

The worsening air quality has left citizens facing heightened concerns, with experts predicting the smog will likely persist for the coming months.
