In a touching video for Sesame Workshop, actor Andrew Garfield opened up about the grief he still feels following the death of his mother, Lynn Garfield, who passed away in 2019 from pancreatic cancer. In the video, Garfield speaks to Elmo, explaining that he's been reflecting on his mother and the memories they shared.

When Elmo asked Garfield how he was feeling, the actor responded, “I’m just thinking about my mom today. She passed away not too long ago and you know, I just miss her a lot.” Garfield emphasized that it's okay to miss someone, saying, “You know, that sadness is kind of a gift. Kind of a lovely thing to feel in a way, because it means that you really loved somebody when you miss them.”

Garfield went on to talk about how his memories of his mother bring him comfort, particularly moments of physical affection. “When I miss someone, when I miss my mom, I remember all the cuddles I used to get from her. All the hugs I used to get from her. It makes me feel close to her when I miss her, in a strange sort of way,” he shared.

The actor concluded by expressing how much happiness his mother brought to his family and those around her. “When I miss her, I remember it’s because she made me so happy. So, I can celebrate her and I can miss her at the same time.”

Garfield's most recent film, We Live in Time, co-starring Florence Pugh, was released in the U.S. on October 11.
