Hasan Murad replaces Shakib Al Hasan for Test against South Africa
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced uncapped left-arm spinner Hasan Murad as a replacement for veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in the squad for the first Test against South Africa.
The match is set to take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka from October 21.
Hasan Murad, 23, has been in impressive form in domestic cricket, claiming 136 wickets in just 30 first-class matches since his debut in 2021.
The decision to include him comes after Shakib made himself unavailable for the Test, citing security concerns.
Chairman of the BCB National Selection Panel, Gazi Ashraf Hossain, said: "We have been informed that Shakib is unavailable for the first Test.
Although he is at the end of his Test career, his experience is invaluable, and we currently do not have anyone who can replace him in both batting and bowling.
However, Hasan Murad has performed consistently in first-class cricket and has been part of our system. We believe he will add balance to our bowling, particularly in home conditions."
Shakib's absence stems from security issues surrounding his return to Bangladesh. He had initially planned to fly from Dubai to Dhaka but was advised by higher authorities to await further instructions before boarding.
Shakib, who previously served as a lawmaker under the Sheikh Hasina-led government, has been staying in the USA amid ongoing political tensions in Bangladesh.
In a statement to bdnews24.com, Shakib explained: "I was to return home... but now I don’t think I can. It is over a security issue, a matter of my own security."
The BCB reportedly urged Shakib to cancel his Dhaka-bound flight and return to the USA instead, further complicating his involvement in the Test series.
