Gaddafi Stadium to increase capacity to 34,000 for Champions Trophy 2025

This extensive renovation is part of Pakistan’s efforts to deliver world-class facilities for the Champions Trophy.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a substantial increase in the spectator capacity at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The iconic stadium, which currently accommodates 21,000 fans, will see its capacity doubled to 34,000 ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Jawaid Qazi Ahmed, the PCB's Director of Infrastructure, revealed that construction work is underway around the clock to achieve this expansion.

The project, estimated to cost Rs7.5 billion, is expected to be completed by December 31, 2024. To improve viewing angles, trees are being removed, and enclosures are being brought closer to the pitch.

With the ICC delegation scheduled to visit Pakistan in late October or early November, the PCB is working diligently to ensure that Gaddafi Stadium is ready to host international cricket matches.

The upcoming Champions Trophy, to be held from February 19 to March 9 will serve as a major test for the expanded stadium.

Pakistan is grouped with India, Bangladesh, and New Zealand in Group A of the Champions Trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently awaiting government clearance to confirm its participation in matches to be played in Pakistan.

Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi will host matches during the tournament. Lahore will be the center of action, hosting seven matches, including the final. Karachi will stage the opening match and a semi-final, while Rawalpindi will host five matches, including the other semi-final.

The semi-finals are scheduled for March 5 and 6, followed by the final on March 9.

Gaddafi Stadium renovations commenced last month ahead of 2025 Champions Trophy

The demolition of enclosures at the venue had commenced, with a significant target set to complete the basement work of the main building by September 30.

The overhaul of Gaddafi Stadium, a key venue for the tournament, is part of a broader Rs12.8 billion investment in upgrading three major cricket venues across Pakistan.

Following this, construction will proceed with one floor being completed each month, with the entire structure, including new pavilions, slated for completion by December 31.

The renovation plan features the installation of steel-structured enclosures that will be positioned closer to the ground, enhancing the spectator experience.

Additionally, the stadium's drainage system is being modernised, digital screens will be added, and outdated floodlights are being replaced with state-of-the-art LED lights.

This extensive renovation at Gaddafi Stadium is a key part of Pakistan’s efforts to deliver world-class facilities for the Champions Trophy.

The upgrades are set to elevate the venue’s status and provide an enhanced experience for both players and fans during the international tournament.

In addition to Gaddafi Stadium, renovations are also underway at the National Bank Stadium and Pindi Stadium, with budgets of Rs3.5 billion and Rs1.5 billion respectively.
