Beloved Brooklyn rapper and FDNY captain Ka, 52, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of music.

Kaseem “Ka” Ryan, the Brooklyn-born rapper and longtime New York firefighter, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 12, according to a statement on his official Instagram page. Known for his distinct style featuring drumless beats and intricate wordplay, Ka was 52 years old. The statement requested privacy for his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Ka grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and led a life dedicated to both music and service. He spent over 20 years with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), eventually rising to the rank of captain. He was also a first responder during the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. The statement praised his contributions, saying, “Ka lived a life of service—to his city, to his community, and to his music.”

Ka's career as a rapper was defined by independence. From his early days with the group Natural Elements to his solo work, he released eleven self-produced albums. His most recent project, The Thief Next to Jesus, was released in August 2024. Ka maintained a deep connection to his fans, often organizing personal events where he could engage directly with them.

In an interview with Impose Magazine, Ka reflected on his lifelong passion for hip-hop, saying, “I knew as a child this was for me — I was chosen for it. It was my music.” Ka’s unique contribution to the underground rap scene remains a lasting legacy.
