Capital finalises traffic strategy for SCO summit

Rawalpindi will also redirect traffic to ensure smooth access for foreign delegations

A three-day traffic diversion plan has been implemented in Islamabad in preparation for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. From October 14 to 16, heavy traffic will be prohibited from entering the capital.

According to the traffic plan, over 1,100 traffic police officers and personnel will be deployed throughout the city. Residents are urged to use alternative routes to avoid delays.

As per the plan, travellers from Peshawar to Rawat via GT Road should use the Taxila, Motorway, Chakri Interchange, and Chak Beli Road. Those traveling from Lahore to Peshawar are advised to take the Rawat, Chak Beli Road, Chakri Interchange, Motorway, and Taxila routes.

Motorists heading from Margalla Road to Rawalpindi should use Ninth Avenue. Traffic from Faisal Avenue to Zero Point will be redirected toward Ninth Avenue. Travelers from Bhara Kahu to Rawalpindi are advised to take Korang Road and the Lehtarar Road from Bani Gala.

Traffic coming from Rawalpindi to Islamabad via President Murree Road should utilise Ninth Avenue. The Zero Point to Faisal Avenue route will be closed for all traffic heading toward Korang Chowk. Those traveling from Colonel Sher Khan Shaheed Road to Faizabad should take the Stadium Road via the Ninth Avenue signal.

Heavy traffic from Peshawar to Lahore should use the Taxila, Motorway, and Tarnol Interchange routes. Additionally, heavy traffic from Lahore GT Road to Islamabad and Rawalpindi should take Chak Beli Road, Chakri Interchange and Motorway.

Police sources also indicate that air surveillance will continue during the arrival of delegations over the three days, while mobile services may be suspended in specific areas.

Pindi's traffic strategy

The Rawalpindi City Traffic Police has announced a special traffic plan in preparation for the SCO moot. As per the plan, a total of 622 traffic officers and personnel will be deployed, including 13 DSPs, 73 senior traffic wardens, and 536 traffic wardens and assistants.

Chief Traffic Officer Benish Fatima has directed the City Traffic Police of Rawalpindi to implement this plan from October 14 to 16, 2024. A spokesperson stated that heavy traffic will be completely banned from entering Rawalpindi during these three days.
