Traffic authorities in Lahore have intensified their crackdown on repeat traffic violations, penalising a vehicle with 108 recorded violations under the city's e-challan system.

The driver was issued a fine of over Rs 50,000 for breaking multiple road rules.

Chief Traffic Officer Amara Athar stated that drivers need to be more cautious of traffic regulations, especially with enhanced monitoring.

The vehicle in question, caught on Mall Road, violated the traffic signal 80 times, lane rules 19 times, and failed to wear a seatbelt on nine occasions.

CTO Amara further explained that those with outstanding e-challans will be unable to access various police services.

These include obtaining driving licences, character certificates, and verifications.

A crackdown on tampering with vehicle number plates, which some use to avoid fines, is also underway.

E-challans to enhance road safety

Earlier this week, Punjab's road safety measures took a major leap forward with the introduction of AI-based e-challans, a technological innovation designed to automate traffic violation detection and enforcement, according to Operation Commander Muhammad Shafique Ahmad of Punjab Safe City.

Speaking to the state-run PTV news channel, he highlighted that under Chief Minister Maryum Nawaz's leadership, Punjab made significant strides in enhancing road safety through these AI-driven e-challans aimed at curbing traffic violations.

This innovative system utilised artificial intelligence to automatically detect 19 types of traffic violations, including driving on the wrong side, triple riding, and speeding.

Ahmad explained that the first phase focused on enforcing e-challans for not wearing helmets on motorcycles and seat belts in vehicles, while the second phase expanded to cover 24 traffic rule violations.
