Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton emphasized the need for increased regulation of social media platforms, warning that without moderation, “we lose total control.” In an interview with CNN’s Michael Smerconish on October 6, 2024, Clinton advocated for the repeal of Section 230 of the Communications Act, which protects platforms from liability for third-party content. She stressed that while some states like California and New York have taken steps to regulate, national action is needed to address the social and psychological impacts of unregulated content. Clinton also praised the restriction of cellphones in schools, stating that students are paying better attention.

“We should be, in my view, repealing something called Section 230,” Clinton said. “If the platforms don’t moderate and monitor the content, we lose total control.” She called for platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok to be held accountable for the content they host, expressing concern about the consequences of failing to do so.

Clinton also discussed how some schools have implemented cellphone bans, which she believes has improved student engagement and attention in classrooms.
