Israel vowed to retaliate following an Iranian missile attack on Tuesday, with army spokesman saying it would respond at the time and place of its choosing.

"This attack will have consequences. We have plans, and we will operate at the place and time we decide," said Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.

The IDF said around 200 missiles had been launched towards Israel before concluding that very few citizens had been injured in the attack, with multiple missiles intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome defence system.

A spokesperson for the White House said that the US military aided Israel's defence against Iranian attacks and helped shoot down missiles targeting Israel.

Earlier Iran fired a salvo of ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday in retaliation for Israel's campaign against Tehran's Hezbollah allies in Lebanon.

Alarms sounded across Israel and explosions could be heard in Jerusalem and the Jordan River valley after Israelis piled into bomb shelters.

Reporters on state television lay flat on the ground during live broadcasts. Reuters journalists saw missiles intercepted in the airspace of neighbouring Jordan.

Israeli media reports said as many as 100 to 400 missiles had been launched.
