Roadblocks create commute nightmares for residents

Travellers face severe delays; emergency services struggle to navigate gridlock

In response to concerns over potential terrorism and sabotage during a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest, the Rawalpindi police have implemented extensive security measures across the twin cities of Rawalpindi.

The city has again been gridlocked with containers and barricades, creating significant disruptions for commuters and emergency services.

Authorities erected barriers at over 30 locations, effectively sealing off major roads in Rawalpindi city cantonment and surrounding areas. Key routes, including Murree Road, were blocked at strategic points such as Murrir metro station, Saddar Chowk, and Shamsabad.

Critical intersections like Taj Company Chowk and Katarian Bridge were similarly obstructed. Other major thoroughfares, including the Motorway and various interchanges, also faced closures, complicating access for both residents and medical transport.

To manage the situation, the police established 34 pickets throughout the district and deployed a force equipped with anti-riot gear. Approximately 4,500 police officers and soldiers are on duty, with mobile patrolling teams assigned to monitor police station boundaries. Each station has been allotted a reserve force trained in crowd control.

Police have been equipped with non-lethal measures, including 12-bore guns, rubber bullets, and tear gas. Strict orders have been issued to prohibit officers from carrying firearms or mobile phones while on duty. Instead, they are to utilise only anti-riot equipment and maintain communication through designated channels.

The Rawalpindi police have made it clear that all personnel must carry essential tools, including megaphones and handcuffs, as they prepare to manage the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf protests.

Each barricade is supplied with tear gas guns and a stock of tear gas shells and grenades to respond swiftly if necessary.

Access restrictions have also been reinforced, with strict enforcement preventing entry to the Rawalpindi city side from established checkpoints, especially to the Red Zone. Police officials have emphasised the importance of maintaining order and safety during the anticipated protests, ensuring readiness for any potential escalation.

The protests are expected to intensify in twin cities, creating hardships for law enforcers to maintain law and order in and around sensitive installations.
