Pindi targets squatters in markets

The encroachments are in violation of the Punjab Local Government Act 2022.

An extensive anti-encroachment operation to be implemented in all commercial centres, wholesale markets and plazas of Rawalpindi has received the green signal.

The operation will begin tomorrow under the supervision of the Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner. All shopkeepers and business organisations operating in commercial centres across the city have been issued legal notices to remove the cabins, stalls, kiosks, temporary sheds, shed boundary walls and ramps for parking that have been built in front of their stores within 24 hours.

The notice declares that the encroachments are in violation of the Punjab Local Government Act 2022, under which they can be demolished. While those responsible for them will have FIRs registered against them and can be fined up to Rs50,000 to Rs0.3 million, as well as face three to six months imprisonment. Today is the last day for business owners to clear the encroachments.

The heavy force of Assistant Commissioner Magistrate has alerted the police's loading shovel team to be prepared for the anti-encroachment operation.

The Administrator Municipal Corporation has said, "People of different nationalities, colours and races from all over Pakistan go to Rawalpindi city for employment; the grand operation will soon restore the beauty of the city for everyone to enjoy."
