KARACHI:

The Nafeesabad area of Teen Hatti has been without electricity for the past three days which triggered a violent protest on Tuesday.

Angry protesters set tyres on fire and put up roadblocks, causing huge traffic jams on Jail Road and surrounding areas. The protesters said that the prolonged power outage has also resulted in a water shortage in their homes. They added that the power outage has upended their daily lives, making it difficult for children to sleep and attend school. Many residents, who rely on daily wages, are unable to work due to the outage.

The protesters claimed that they have been thrown into the dark even though they regularly pay hefty bills to K-Electric. During the protest, the protesters confronted KE staff and their vehicles, demanding immediate action. They declared they would continue their protest until power is restored in Nafeesabad.

A spokesperson for KE stated that electricity supply to the areas of Teen Hatti, Martin Road, and Nafeesabad has been disconnected due to non-payment of dues. "The outstanding amount has exceeded Rs70 million. Residents are urged to ensure timely payment of their electricity bills. Timely payments play a crucial role in reducing or eliminating load shedding in the area."
