PPP seeks JUI-F input on amendment package

ISLAMABAD:

The PPP, which has been propping up the ruling coalition without actually becoming part of the federal government, has once again approached the JUI-F to garner its support for a constitutional amendment package that JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman recently rejected.

According to sources, Murtaza Wahab— spokesperson for PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari—contacted JUI-F's Kamran Murtaza.

Wahab requested the JUI-F leader to prepare a draft of the constitutional amendments and submit it to PPP for negotiations. However, the sources reported that Kamran Murtaza rejected the request, advising the PPP to prepare the draft itself while considering constitutional matters.

Kamran Murtaza remarked that since the PPP had approached them, it should present the initial draft. He said the draft should be based on constitutional and legal considerations, not tailored to any individual. The sources said the JUI-F will consult with the PTI only after receiving the draft.

The ruling coalition received a setback after it failed to present a constitutional amendment package in parliament that sought sweeping changes in the country's judicial system.
