Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, known for Bollywood hits like Satya and Rangeela, has announced his decision to use only artificial intelligence (AI)-generated music in future projects.
Varma's latest venture, RGV Den Music, will exclusively feature AI-generated compositions from apps like Suno and Udio, according to a report by TechCrunch.
Varma’s shift to AI comes as creative industries grapple with the rising influence of automation, with some expressing concern over potential job losses.
However, Varma urged fellow artists to embrace the technology. According to him, the music comes from one's thoughts and there is a need to have clarity on what one wants the app to produce.
The director revealed that the entire background score of his upcoming film Saree is AI-generated.
He also criticized traditional composers for delays and high costs, claiming AI offers a faster, cheaper alternative.
India is a leading figure in film production, making around 1,500 to 2,000 movies annually. Its music industry also releases 20,000 to 25,000 songs annually.
Varma is working with startups Reclaim Protocol and Story Protocol to protect the intellectual property of his AI-generated music through cryptographic proofs.
Despite concerns from industry figures like director Christopher Nolan, who warn against over-reliance on AI, Varma predicts the technology will reshape India’s prolific film and music sectors.
