LAHORE:

As the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rally at Minar-e-Pakistan approaches, police have launched a widespread crackdown on political workers and leaders.

This follows a directive from Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran, who, during a meeting on Thursday with divisional Superintendents of Police (SPs), Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), and Station House Officers (SHOs), called for swift action against PTI supporters in anticipation of the event.

Police conducted raids in various areas of Lahore, including Ghaziabad, Shahdara, Harbanspura, Defence, Islampura and Tajpura.

Among the prominent actions, PTI alleged a raid at the residence of party leader Engineer Yasir Gillani in Shahdara, where police also targeted a pharmacy owned by his cousin.

In another incident, authorities arrested the brother and cousin of PTI leader Hammad Awan after raiding his home.

A separate raid was carried out at the residence of PTI Lahore President Sheikh Imtiaz, but he evaded arrest as he was not present.

In addition to targeting rally organizers, police officials have been instructed to arrest individuals involved in the May 9 riots, ensuring that pending cases are addressed.

Divisional SPs are leading the operations, and the crackdown is expected to intensify as the rally date draws nearer.

Police has finalised its operational plan, with the security strategy set to be fully implemented once the district administration confirms the event's venue.

The police actions come amid concerns over potential disruptions during the rally, with authorities emphasising the need to maintain law and order.

As PTI supporters gear up for the Minar-e-Pakistan gathering, the political climate in Lahore remains tense and further updates on security measures are expected as the situation develops.
